If we don’t watch it, the comparison game can be dangerous.
Who is a mom you look up to? I have my own list of women that I visit, ok troll online, to see what they are wearing, where they are going, to find out about the new job they got or brand they are working with. I’m all about support – so I always comment letting them know that I’m genuinely happy for them.
But, I can’t say that I don’t immediately think about whether I am as far ahead in that area of my life. I compare – and I know it’s bad for me.
It’s a natural habit that I didn’t pay too much attention to. Until one day when I noticed I was caring about things I never cared about before. I had opinions that I didn’t relate to in the past. I was changing – and not in the direction that I wanted to be going.
It is easier to feel bad about how you’re doing as a mother when you’re seeing the highlight reel of another woman’s mothering.
That doesn’t make for a pretty picture – yet, it’s at those times when we feel lonely, ugly, messed up and broken that we realize our lives can’t compare and live up to the images we’re seeing.
Authenticity is not as easy to find online. Which, is mostly where we see what we can compare to and this is where the danger comes in. Most women are not showing the times they feel lonely, ugly, or know that they messed up.
That doesn’t make for a pretty picture – yet, it’s at those times when we feel lonely, ugly, messed up and broken that we realize our lives can’t compare and live up to the images we’re seeing.
Times like these are only be helped by a supernatural source that lets us know we are never alone. We are beautifully made in His image, forgiven, and given abundant love, mercy, and grace – and that’s in God’s arms.
But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor.
Galations 6:4
Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!
2 Corinthians 13:5
A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.
Proverbs 14:30
I look to these verses the moment I feel that I don’t live up to the standard of mom that I’m seeing on a daily basis.
We’re made to follow our own paths – so how can it possibly look like another moms path.
Remember this the next time you’re playing the comparison game: What is for you is for you. You are surrounded by favor. Blessings come to you also.
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
1 John 2:15
Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act.
Psalm 37:5
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
Psalm 139:14
