Worried that I’m not doing something “right.” Concerned that my penchant for liking many things and being good at a great many more, is a detriment to my trajectory. Basically, can I do everything I want and still make an impact? What do I want to be known for? ⠀ As a multi-hyphenate talent I get caught up in my head a lot. Nervous that my writing will crowd the space where my love of cooking resides. And then my draw to style and fashion will be will diminish my power to speak life and pour into people. Ya know…⁣ Just standing here breastfeeding while Black…⁣ With a giant virtual plant on my head…⁣ Because I deserve.⁣ Because we deserve.⁣ ⁣ #BlackBreastfeedingWeek, is necessary. Period. So much so, the CDC advised that if breastfeeding were to increase within the Black community, we could reduce the Black infant mortality rate by as much as 50%. As it currently stands, Black babies are 2-3x more likely to die before their 1st birthday, compared to their white counterpart. ALSO, breastfeeding lowers the risk of hormone related cancers (breast, ovarian, etc), Type-2 Diabetes, childhood asthma, and so much more… Quite literally, by encouraging breastfeeding, we are saving Black babies and Black women’s lives! Save and share this post if you are a Mom who needs encouragement for the week ahead! ⠀ My usually organized life was complete chaos last week, and by Saturday, my body had had enough and I was down for the count with a migraine. ⠀ But today is the start of a new week. Granted, a glimpse at my calendar shows and even busier wel than last but that’s ok! ⠀ At the beginning of every week, I wrote down what I call my affirmations to live by. They change depending on the week and what’s going on, but a friend told me to share them so here they are: ⠀ I am enough I am not my mistakes I will not worry about things I can not control I am anticipating abundance Pookah doesn’t need a perfect mom, just me. ⠀ I write these down in my journal at the beginning of every week and in my 5 minute journal. ⠀ It helps. I never go anywhere without my notebook. It's not just because I am a writer and I have stories to get down. It's also because my brain is overflowing with ideas and I have to write them down to capture them before they're pushed out of my head my the next thought. Yes, like most writers I have tons of notebooks, but I Iike to use all the pages in one before moving to the next one. This notebook has to do lists, ideas, outlines, intentions written out, reminders, and everything else that passes through my brain. Raise your hand if there was ever a time you know you needed to ask for help, but for whatever reason, you just didn’t? 🙋🏽‍♀️ You just smiled like I’m doing in this picture, knowing deep down inside you were struggling. #ClevelandClinicPartner⁣ ⁣ Maybe you thought you could handle it on your own. I’ve partnered with @clevelandclinic , who has a ton of resources to help people manage anxiety during this time.⁣ ⁣ I personally read an article on their website about how another mom copes with stress and manages anxiety. I knew that stress has a huge impact on mental health, but I just wasn’t making the connection. If you’re struggling, you are not alone. Get help if you need it. Use available resources. Find a therapist- mental health professionals are here for a reason. Talk to your loved ones, go for a walk, journal, have a glass of wine, do yoga, binge watch trash tv. Today was our first official day of homeschool! 🍎📓 Yes, you read that correctly—homeschool.📚 I decided to homeschool my children a few weeks ago after their school presented a reopening plan that wasn't going to work for our family. The kids are excited! Our plan includes a mix of online and offline work—math, foreign languages, music, STEM, and coding classes. I feel confident that I made the best decision for my children. I know this isn't an option for everyone, but it's perfect for us this season. In #motherhood there are a few moments that can make me feel less than. Moments where I feel like I don’t have the answers and feel like a terrible mom. I don’t think people even remember but influencers, celebrities, anyone you look up to, they are struggling behind closed doors just like you. I am not one who pretends she knows all the answers. I am not one who wants to act like I do either. My #8monthold got a fever and everything felt like it stopped. I don’t sleep well, I don’t think well and I get anxious. She’s feeling terrible and makes it know. We have been nursing, letting her crawl around naked and doing everything under the sun to keep her happy. It wasn’t until you all stepped up and helped me through this time where things are uncertain, and came through with the best recommendations and advice that I remember why I love social media so much. Yes, we often compare ourselves with other people and their families. We compare lifestyles and home decor or maybe even spouses or pets. We live a life comparing and forget what we all got on here to do, which is to simply connect. I’ve connected with so many wonderful people who haven’t judged, who haven’t made me feel bad because I “should know and pick up a book and read,” and for that reason I say thank you. She is doing a bit better and we are praying through this. Just wanted to say I thank you guys for caring so much about us. Romanticize your life. Yesterday I shared in my IG stories this TikTok audio I am obsessed with. It’s all about romanticizing your own life. So many times I have tried not to do “too much”. I have denied myself of simple indulges. Why? -Mom Guilt: I feel guilty when I put myself first. -Overwhelmed: I think I don’t have time for BIG changes so I do nothing -What will people THINK? I have so much to live for. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When I’m on here doing DIYs, traveling, chasing after my kids or anything I share at all it’s because I won’t allow my circumstances to define me. Even if I’m not having the best day I’m going to get up and do the things that I want so that I can say I lived my life on my terms. I tried everything that I wanted to. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My condition won’t defeat me or at least not without a fight. Every moment I have on this earth with the people I have will be cherished. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Whether I’m building things, making changes to my house, sharing cute outfits or even recipes it’s because those are the things that bring me joy. Joy is something that I deserve and I’ll take every moment of it that I can get. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I need a living donor so that I can avoid dialysis. IT'S IMPORTANT TO THINK ABOUT THIS AT LEAST ONCE EVERYDAY. Let's face it guys! Life can be stressful and annoying and upsetting sometimes. People can disappoint. Things and rewards you look forward to can fall to the wayside. In order to keep circumstances from bringing me super down, I try to focus and think about the things that make me happy and excited about life.⁠ .⁠ .⁠ Three things that make me excited about life right now are:⁠ (1) I'm loving my hair twisties right now. I feel like a 90's girl and the maintenance of this hair is so easy!⁠ (2) My sister, my mom, and my two nephews have been with me for 2 weeks now and I am so happy I get to spend time with them!⁠ (3) Whoever invented sweat shorts is genius because that is my uniform right now and I am loving them!⁠ .⁠ .⁠ Now you! 🥳 It’s #friendcheckfriday + let’s chat snail mail 💌 Do you like to receive it? When was the last time you wrote a letter? Checking in on the ones we love most, any way we can is always meaningful—but I personally think there’s a special sentiment behind a handwritten note or card. We are a military family, which means we are away from our friends, and checking in on them, way more often than not. Raegan and I love to sit together and write notes to mail out to friends. Raegan’s best friend now lives in Texas, and she completely lights up when she receives her letters in the mailbox. It’s Tuesday. The good thing about holiday weekends is the short work week the following week. What you can expect from me going forward in terms of contact * mom talk Monday - where I post parenting related content on the blog. I will be sharing more of our experiences * Wednesday styling - one of the things I got a lot of feedback on was more styling content. How to and also 3 ways to style something * Sharing more thrifted looks * Everyday life - I will be sharing weekly what I wore that week in real life. Its hard for me to post on stories because I work full time outside of blogging and when the kids and my husband come home from daycare/preschool/work I like to put my phone down. * More recipes - I will be introducing a Sunday cooking series. I will most likely go live so I will need to keep the meals 30 minutes and under. With less ingredients. * The newsletter will be going out weekly. Make sure to subscribe!
